    Description

1924 US PASSPORT SIGNED BY CHARLES E. HUGHES, SECRETARY OF STATE (FORMER NY GOVERNOR, AND TWICE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE), ISSUED TO IRISH-BORN PREACHER (AND STUDENT OF EVANGELICAL PREACHER, REV. D. L. MOODY).
ORIGINAL US PASSPORT, ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE IN 1924, TO WILLIAM SINCLAIR ANDERSON, TO TRAVEL TO “ALL COUNTRIES,” AND SIGNED BY CHARLES E. HUGHES, SECRETARY OF STATE (AND FORMER NY GOVERNOR & SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE).
The folded, engraved passport measures 12 x 8.75 inches, with embossed red State Department Seal, and signed by the holder, William Sinclair Anderson (An American preacher, living in Montague, MA). Sinclair was born in Ireland, and came to the US at the invitation of Evangelical Preacher Rev. Dwight L. Moody, who taught Anderson at the Bible Institute of Chicago & The Mt. Herman School (which was founded by Moody, along with Northfield School, Moody Bible Institute & Moody Publishers). Anderson was a preacher in several Massachusetts towns, including Prescott & Leverett.
Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes Sr. (1862-1948) was an American statesman, Republican Party politician, and the 11th Chief Justice of the United States. He was also the 36th Governor of New York, the Republican nominee in the 1916 presidential election (losing to Woodrow Wilson), and the 44th United States Secretary of State (serving under Warren G. Harding & Calvin Coolidge). In 1930, President Herbert Hoover re-appointed him to the Supreme Court, as Chief Justice, succeeding Chief Justice Taft, making them 2 of the few jurists to serve two terms on the court, first as Associate Judges, and then re-appointed to Chief Justice.
The passport is stamped from the British Consulate in Boston, plus stamps from Glasgow and Belfast (where Anderson was born), and signed by the British Vice Consul. The passport photograph is lacking (it appears to have once been pinned to the passport, as the pin is intact). Housed in original passport folder, signed by Anderson, noting Belfast as his place of birth. Good condition, lacking the photograph, with light wear to covers.
